Why AI Will Never Replace Designers Like Me. My Diary, Entry No.4

AI in Design: Enhancing Creativity, Never Replacing the Human Story!

Let’s get one thing straight: AI is fast. It’s helpful. It’s inspiring. But it’s not a designer. Yes — in just a few seconds, AI can generate a room in any style. It’s an incredible tool. I use it often — especially in the early creative process. It helps me explore ideas, test different aesthetics, and show clients inspirational renders before we even touch a space. But what AI does is not design. It’s inspiration, not execution.

What AI Can’t Do

Here’s what AI can’t do:

  • It can’t take real measurements.

  • It doesn’t understand proportions, flow, or scale.

  • It doesn’t know what *you* need — your routines, habits, or what brings you joy.

  • It can’t tailor a space to your life.

  • It doesn’t see the story behind your objects or the emotion of a space.

  • It doesn’t problem-solve when your window’s off-centre or your budget is tight.

What AI delivers is a dream. What I do is turn that dream into a home.

How I Use AI to Enhance My Work

As a small entrepreneur, I love finding tools that support my creativity and make my business more efficient. That’s exactly what AI does. It helps me:

  • Save time (and money!) in the concept phase.

  • Communicate ideas visually to clients.

  • Test colour palettes and furniture styles.

  • Build mood boards that spark conversation.

  • Push the boundaries of what a space could be.

But the real work — the design that lasts — happens when I bring it all together. When I step into your home, listen to your story, and create something that fits. AI supports that process, but it doesn’t replace it.

From Render to Reality

In this post, I’m showing exactly how I do that — using my own home. You’ll see an AI-generated version of my living room (how I imagined it), followed by what the space looks like in real life. My actual space is all black and white: minimal, clean, and full of intention. You can see the transformation here.

This is where AI ends — and where thoughtful, human design begins.

The Role of Human Touch in Design

While AI can generate stunning visuals, it lacks the human touch. Design is deeply personal. It involves understanding emotions, stories, and experiences. When I design a space, I consider how it will be used. I think about the laughter shared over meals, the quiet moments of reflection, and the vibrant gatherings with friends.

AI can’t capture these nuances. It can’t feel the warmth of a family gathering or the comfort of a well-loved chair. These are the elements that make a house a home.

Embracing Technology While Honouring Tradition

I believe in embracing technology. AI is a powerful ally in the design process. It streamlines tasks and offers new perspectives. However, I also honour the traditions of design. The craftsmanship, the artistry, and the human connection are irreplaceable.

In my work, I blend the best of both worlds. I use AI to generate ideas, but I bring my expertise and intuition to the table. This combination creates spaces that are not only beautiful but also functional and meaningful.

Conclusion: The Future of Design

As we move forward, the relationship between AI and design will evolve. I see a future where technology enhances creativity without overshadowing it. AI will continue to be a tool in my toolkit, but it will never replace the heart of design — the human story.

In the end, design is about more than aesthetics. It’s about creating spaces that resonate with people. It’s about understanding their needs and dreams. And that, my friends, is where the magic happens.
